Reservoir or Lake Use:
Municipal wastewater treatment system for a population of 5,700. The city currently does not have discharge limits because of the infiltration pond. They monitored effluents during 1999 with the following results: 20-100 mg/L BOD, 20-40 mg/L TSS, and the ammonia levels were around 11.3 mg/L.
System Overview and Reservoir:
The primary pond is 37 acres in area, 5 ft maximum depth, with a BOD loading of about 28 lb/acre/day. There is no grid aeration. Flow rate is 0.7 MGD, with a 100% to primary pond, then into the 40-acre infiltration pond (IP) where the water goes underground to a river. System is continuous discharge. Exact detention time unknown because percolation process varies.
Reported Problem Before Installation:
Sludge had accumulated in the primary cell to the point that a large island appeared when water levels were low. Spring odor events at ice-out typically lasted 3 weeks or more.
Installation:
Date: Sept. 1999, installed six (6) units equal to SB2500* in the primary pond. May 2006, replaced four original units with four (4) SB10000-DM machines. July 2006, replaced remaining two original units with three (3) SB10000-DM units.
Results:
Soon after SolarBee installations odor control was achieved and sludge reduction had begun. By November 2001, overall sludge depth of pond was 14.5 inches, and by August 2002 it was approximately 11 inches with the major mound around the influent reduced considerably. Spring odor events at ice-out now lasts less than 3 days if at all; odors for the most part are now non-existent. Also, the primary pond used to go septic during hot weeks in July or August for a week or two, but now that does not happen. In 2006, the original 6 units were upgraded with 7 dual mix units, improving water quality and odor control even further. The superintendent reports that the system is working well and objectives are being met. The city is happy with the performance of the SolarBees, and appreciates the benefits they have seen in the primary pond.
