Case Study for Customer Location MS81:

Reservoir or Lake Use:
This is a municipal sludge storage pond that receives waste sludge from an oxidation ditch system. The influent to the pond is mainly storm sewer, but some domestic and industrial waste is also taken in.

System Overview and Reservoir:
The sludge storage pond is approximately 12 surface acres, with a working depth of 8 feet deep and a volume of about 25 MG. The average flow to the pond is 0.3 MGD, with peak flows over 1.0 MGD during the rainy season. The decanted effluent from the pond is returned to the head works of the wastewater plant. The pond was originally an aerated lagoon, but was converted to a sludge storage pond when the oxidation ditch was built.

Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation:
Odor problems and sludge build up by the influent to the pond led to the installation of six 10-hp brush aerators at the influent end of pond.  The aerators had high energy costs, and the city was not very satisfied with results.

SolarBee Installation:
Date: July 2003, installed two (2) SB10000s with 24-hour kits, and with the intake hoses set at 44” below the surface.

Results:
The two SolarBees reduced the need to run all six 10-hp brush aerators; now, only 1 or 2 aerators are needed. Power consumption has been reduced by $1,400.00 per. Dissolved oxygen levels are near saturation in the upper two feet of the pond at the test points, and consistent odor control has been achieved. The objectives are being met, and the Superintendent is very happy with the odor control from the SolarBees together with the decrease in the plant’s electric bill.
