Case Study for Customer Location CA50:

Reservoir or Lake Use:
Partial-mix wastewater treatment system for processing industrial wastes generated by a winery. Treated effluent is discharged to on-site irrigation system.

System Overview and Reservoir:
The system consists of a primary and secondary cells (Cell 1 and Cell 3, respectively), and a tertiary storage cell before discharge for irrigation. Cell 1 is 0.3 acres, 8.0 ft deep, 0.5 MG capacity, loading is variable with estimated peak at harvest is 127 lbs of BOD/acre/day, and the cell had 25 hp of grid aeration operating 24 hrs/day much of the year and fulltime during harvest. Cell 3 is 1.1 acres, 8.0 ft deep, 2.3 MG capacity, and the cell had 7.5 hp of grid aeration operating 24 hrs/day for part of the year.  Flow rate is 0.025 MGD peak at harvest, with 100% of the flow to Cell 1, then to Cell 3, then tertiary irrigation storage Cell 2; total system detention time is 113 days. The effluent is discharged into an adjacent irrigation system.

Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation:
High energy costs associated with grid aeration requirements, particularly in the primary cell during harvest time.

SolarBee Installation:
Date: April 2002, installed one (1) SB2500 with a 24-hour kit into Cell 1, and one (1) SB2500 with a 24-hour kit into Cell 3. November 2002, exchanged each unit to the larger, SB10000W with 24-hour electrical kit due to increased production at winery and new state requirement of minimum of 2

Results:
The SolarBee-enhanced treatment system worked well from the start and quickly reduced aeration run times. Expected energy savings are over $20K per year with all aeration run time displaced during peak hours. Because of the solar-powered water circulators, the customer received an Energy Commission Peak Load Reduction Grant from the state. Manager pleased with how well the machines are running and with realized energy savings through reduced run time for aerators.
